[livejournal.com profile] deepad has founded [livejournal.com profile] eid_fic for fic about Muslim characters:

There's been a discussion in fandom about the Christian-centric nature of the yuletide fanfiction exchange. It has made me feel even more homesick - since Eid is going to be celebrated soon, and Durga Puja, Dussehra, and Diwali soon after. It has also made me wonder - how many people in fandom can write about even one Muslim character? And more importantly, how many will care to do it?

So I have started - eid_fic. A community to post drabbles and ficlets about Muslim characters, hopefully in time for Eid, which will be either on Saturday or Sunday, depending on where you live.

Now, I don't know many people in fandom, and even less read me. So I am asking you all to help spread the word about it. And, should you feel so inclined, to add your voices to the reasons as to why people should participate in this.

I think a 100 words or less is an easily doable goal to write even if you don't know much or anything about a character's religion. And I think thinking about whether you've ever encountered Muslim characters in your reading and watching helps clarify the questions raised about their invisibility, absence, and/or misrepresentation. These drabbles don't need to deal with those issues. Even a fluffy drabble about Princess Jasmine and Aladdin would qualify. I think that even that moment of realisation that this Disney Princess and her family are Muslims (the Sultan says, 'By Allah' in the film, as proof) is an important one.

I have sporadic internet access right now, so I won't be around to moderate, comment, or post much. By which reasoning, I probably should not have undertaken this in the first place. But something made me step out of my normal lurker-mode to do it, and I would really be grateful if you could help me make it work.

Write me a hundred words (or less). Post about this in your own journals. And wish people Eid Mubarak in the same spirit with which I reiterate people's Christmas greetings to me-- 'I celebrate your celebration of this'. Because no occasion that gives joy to people should be willfully ignored.

There is more of an explanation here, but it is Eid-ul-Fitr on Saturday the 13th in some parts of the world and Sunday the 14th in other parts, so if people could write a drabble this weekend, it would be a great time to post.
