Yuletide contemplations

Current nominations eta: Apparently that wasn't supposed to be public. Sorry!

Safely nominated without me eta: You don't need a minimum number of nominations. It's just that, since you can change your nominations until the end of the nomination process, I wasn't counting anything with less than three nomination as "safely" in.

eta:

3:35 PM me: do you know what gives me joy? it gives me joy that the manga about the anthropomorphic penises is on the yuletide noms list.
Nestra: snork.
3:40 PM me: i didn't even have to nominate it myself.
Nestra: That's the joy of fandom.
3:41 PM me: do i want to volunteer to write it? i mean. it'd be kind of embarassing. "yeah, i wrote the talking penises story." and i wouldn't even get the cachet of weirdest story, because bdsm care bears is the perennial winner.
Nestra: Oh, I don't know about that. You might look at it as "When else will I have this opportunity?"
3:44 PM me: there is nothing to stop me from writing about talking penises at any time. anything except, you know, lack of interest and abundance of shame.
Nestra: So yuletide would be like manufactured interest.
3:45 PM me: it is true.
although i am kind of into one couple in the manga. not the penises. the boys they're attached to.
wow, that is not a paragraph i thought i would ever write.
3:47 PM Nestra: I imagine that's...weird.
3:51 PM me: it is. v. weird.

Temporary. Needed break. Will email details later.

I didn't want to bother you about it, but I was also concerned!

Thank you!

Ooh, someone out there besides me reads Dokebi Bride! :D *hopes it makes it*

[identity profile] untrue-accounts.livejournal.com 2007-09-20 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes. I like it lots. I am just not sure if I want to ask for fanfic or just watch how the manhwa develops.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-09-20 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hard for me to see any holes where fic could slide in so far. Mind you, in lots of fandoms I don't see holes where fic could slide in, and it doesn't stop lots of other writers.

*encourages Mushishi, because it needs more love* :D

[identity profile] untrue-accounts.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Mushishi is another one where I'm afraid of fic not living up to the source.

[identity profile] rivkat.livejournal.com 2007-09-20 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a rule I'd missed -- you need 3 nominations to continue forward?
ext_7843: (Default)

[identity profile] untrue-accounts.livejournal.com 2007-09-20 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's a rule! It's just that, since people can change their nominations until the period closes, I don't feel sure items with fewer than three noms are safely on the list. More than three people can still change their minds, but it seems less likely. I have made it my arbitrary cut-off for "Stop worrying."

[identity profile] xsmoonshine.livejournal.com 2007-09-20 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone needs to let the mods know that Love Pistols = Sex Pistols, because they're both on, and the stories and writers may get split up...

1. Mellllly! *tacklehugs*

2. You've requested Coffee Prince OMG!! (What? It's not like I have one-track mind or anything.)

3. Clearly I need to watch/read more media/manga/whatever since I only know of, like, four out of the entire list. Oyce pimping Nana had me intrigued. I may look around to see if I could get my hands on the manga.

You want to read Nana! You do! You do! *jedi thingum* It is AWESOME and I have been going through the volumes in JAPANESE at a breakneck pace (well, breakneck for my Japanese) and I have already cried two or three times and reread several bits! Viz's translation is really tone deaf; all the characters speak the same stupid slang and it sounds completely wrong. Also, vol. 1 is more of a prologue, so even if you aren't caught by it, I'd read vol. 2 before deciding.

Also also, there is an anime that goes up to around v. 11 or 12 of the manga if you'd rather watch something and I am sure I can find it somewhere and send it to you!

/mad pimpage

Also also also, if you were to dip your toe into the world of manga, I think you'd really like Emma/Victorian Romance Emma (it's Emma here in the US). Thankfully, CMX seems to be doing a fairly good job with the translation, though I can't tell if it's period-appropriate. The translation, that is, not the manga, as Mori Kaoru seems to adore obsessive research on all aspects of Victorian life and she is AWESOME and has the bestest author notes with the possible exception of Yuki Kaori who draws chibi smiling saints with eyes on plates.

Um. Possibly I should not have mentioned that as Yuki Kaori is TEH CRACK.

/ends pimpage for real

Hah. I salute your pimptasticness, as your enthusiasm got me very intrigued about this series indeed. Is either the anime or manga superior to the other? Being a more of a fan of visual media, I tend to prefer anime, but unless the quality is up to par with something like Honey and Clover (which has rapidly become the yardstick by which I measure all other anime adaptations -- not that I've seen many), I feel like I should check out the original manga. Obviously, I'll need translated volumes. Amazon has until volumes 7 with v. 8 coming next January. I'll start with the first few volumes and see how it goes!

I've heard of Emma from Mely's review! It does indeed seem like my speed. Since both you and Mely think I'd like it, I'll trust your collective judgments and give this a try. *g*

I am sad I cannot actually burn you things, since I don't have them downloaded. But! I have links. Here's Nana and Emma. I usually read them on my computer with CDisplay. Though of course I encourage buying the hard copies too!

I can't vouch for the quality of the Nana anime or the Emma anime, but that's only because I haven't seen them. Nearly everyone I've talked to has agreed that the Nana anime is excellent though, and I haven't heard that much about the Emma anime, but I think it's pretty good as well.

1. Voonnnnnnnnieeeeeeeee!!!

I've been lurking. Though less since I figured out how to edit my hosts file to block LJ at work. It is that bad. Yes.

2. I blame you! I am only four episodes in but already I adore it. I wish I could burn it to DVD; I hate watching things on computer. I kinda ship the main girl with the dog's music producer dad, because they are so sweet and gentle with each other, and the main guy's a jerk and even the dog's dad is kind of a sulky teenage asshole when it comes to his real girlfriend, but my preference isn't so extreme it will ruin the ending that is clearly coming. I wish they spent as much time on the characterization of the artist as the other three, though, because she really suffers by comparison, even though she is less of a jerk than the rich kid. Except that she has to stop flirting with him. Unless allowing massive invasions of your personal space isn't flirting in Korea, but somehow I doubt it.

Seriously I love it much more than my inability to remember anyone's names would indicate.

3. Have you not seen Profit? It is so made for you! A sociopath raised by television tries to take over the major advertiser of his childhood! Played by Adrian Pasdar in his pre-Petrelli days!

You might also like Revengers Tragedy, because it has Eddie Izzard and Christopher Eccleston being v. slashy at each other while reciting iambic pentameter. I am going to make [livejournal.com profile] astolat vid it for me when I have a chance to rewatch and make notes and get her the DVD and CD. What? It's only been two or three years since I won a vid from her at VVC.

Of the manga, I think Nana and Emma would both really appeal to you. You might also like Mushishi, which is beyond wonderful all the way into a spiritual experience.

[identity profile] vonnie-k.livejournal.com 2007-09-22 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
1. Hello, stranger! We miss you around here. It's good to see you post in whichever venue you feel comfortable.

2. I'm glad you're enjoying Coffee Prince. The main girl (Eun Chan) is adorable, no? I love her a lot. The jerkface male lead grows on you, especially as he starts to angst over his budding romantic feelings for Eun Chan. But you know me -- I do like me some quality romantic angst. The beautiful artist does get the short stick in the characterization, but at least she's not vilified, and I dug that she valued her work as much as, if not more than, her love life.

If you like, I can send you DVDs of the high-quality .avi files of the episodes with corresponding subtitle files, easy as pie. E-me with your current mailing addy if interested!

3. I have seen Profit! It is an awesome show, despite the cheesy outdated computer CGI effect. I was pretty chuffed to see Adrian Pasdar on Heroes, since he was such a delicious psychopath on Profit. One of the reason I fell so hard for Dexter last year was because it felt *exactly* like how Profit might have been, had it been given some more money and breathing room to be as darkly funny and out there as it promised to be in those few episodes. I think off your list, I've seen Profit, a handful of Dark Angel eps, then Coffee Prince and Ginger Snaps... and that's about it. Oh! And I bought The Rabbi's Cat since you and Oyce made it sound so appealing. It's on top of my ever-growing "to read" pile. *g*

I'll check out Nana and Emma. Thanks for the personalized rec! And I've never heard of Mushishi. Wiki tells me there are both manga and anime versions, both of which were highly praised. Should I try one over the other?

Oh, neat. Though I am a little wary of requesting and/or offering it, for fear of the same problem I ran into with your story, where the other person clearly has access to more of the source than I do. I was so relieved when you didn't seem to think I'd put in anything incompatible with later developments!

[identity profile] mikeneko.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, no, with sufficient dollops of kookiness, you can't do wrong by that one. And now that my fanfic itch has been scritched there (thanks v.v. much), I'll tuck it back into the deck for a bit.

[livejournal.com profile] galerian_ash said she might also consider asking for 100 Demons; and I doubt I'm the only one who's been chowing down the licensed translation. The primary story mode, OCs with Iijimas tangled up in their periphery, doesn't really change, so no worries in terms of that; just speccing the parameters of TV show seems safe. (I think Uncle Kai was the only character I put on the list who isn't covered by TV or in French volumes yet.) Plus, the fandom comes equipped with peoples like mjj who're up to date with whole series and are willing to kick one's fanfic in a good cause. ^^;;

Planet Ladder now has one vote, and I don't plan to change that because I'm still hoping that I can get someone to write it for me (or get assigned to write it for someone else).

Narrowing it down to six was hard. I finally ended up eliminating everything that I was neither going to request nor offer to write. There are a lot of fandoms I'd love to see fic for but don't quite feel passionate enough about to ask for or know well enough to offer to write.
ext_7843: (Default)

[identity profile] untrue-accounts.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, good. I will put off the decision about whether to request Planet Ladder for a little while, secure in the knowledge that it will at least be there for me to request if I decide to.

Hmm. Now. What to pick out of what's left.

I know! I am so sad Her Majesty's Dog is not yet up there! Ditto for Tramps Like Us!

Also, I have conned [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn has helpfully volunteered to nominate Nana so I can nominate something else so the number will probably go to 1 once I figure out my changes.

Oooo Rabbi's Cat! I didn't think of that!

And I just spotted Emma on the list!

[identity profile] untrue-accounts.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I am leaning towards HMD, but am not so sure about the other two, Tramps Like Us because I don't love it quite as much and The Rabbi's Cat because I love it too much to see it done badly.

(Amazon says The Rabbi's Cat 2 is coming out April 2008! YAY!)

[identity profile] rushthatspeaks.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I will definitely nominate Her Majesty's Dog. And Finder. And Vampire Knight. Not sure about Land of the Blindfolded because I have a rule that I cannot nominate things I would not write, and I am not sure I could write for that one, I don't know why. But I might anyhow because maybe someone else would write it.
