Yami no Matsuei [anime]: Hisoka, Before

Title: Hisoka, Before
Spoilers: Pre-series; information established by "Vampire's lure" arc
Rating: G
Disclaimer: I wish.

Summary: Drabbles for [livejournal.com profile] fuda_100's Treasure Challenge.

Pride

The boy performs katas in the garden. While he's moving, the world is perfectly still. While he's moving, he's nothing but spirit and air.

He stops, and drops back into his body, and only just manages to bow instead of fall. His wrists ache from the weight of the blade, and his skin smarts in the patterns left by the new night braces. The marks remain invisible, no matter how much they burn, and so he never complains of them.

"You do our house proud," his father says, and doesn't touch him, so they can both pretend it's true.

Breath

You pretend to sleep, because if they know you're in pain they'll give you more drugs, and you don't want drugs. You want every breath you can get.

Your mother watches over you in the darkened room. You listen to her breathe. In, out. Steadier than your heartbeat. You open your eyes a slit, just to see her.

She doesn't gasp, but you know. You can feel her heart jump like it's in your own chest. You know.

Your hands fist in the bedsheets; you turn your head away. The hell with her. You can breathe on your own.

Very nice. I like the way you got across Hisoka's childhood without going into much detail. You didn't have to say it was horrible, because the actions/reactions of the characters speaked clearly for themselves.

I especially liked the last part of the second one, it has Hisoka written all over it.

I think I'll add this to my memories =D

Thanks -- and yes, it's usually stronger to let the actions speak than to editorialize, especially in drabbles, where you hardly have space. ;)

I'm glad you liked them.
