Race and gender in vids

springgreen has tallied the presence of women and actors of color in the VVC 2007 Premieres. See also harriet_spy's COC tallies for 2005 and 2006 (with note).

Has someone collected a list of vids about COC and/or dealing substantially with race? (mimesere? rydra_wong?)

And if any of you want to recommend vids about COC and/or race, please do.

I have many imaginary vids in my head now, largely inspired by "Women's Work" and "I Put You there." Now all I need to do is a) get a new computer, b) acquire a ton of source, and c) learn to vid. Or possibly I will attempt to sic my crazy ideas on a vidder for next year's auctions, although I suspect they would all hate me because of the large range of source or the need for lots of tech bits.

I want a deadbrowalking vid that showcases all the dead black men who sacrifice themselves for white heroes, I want to draw Asians into Firefly, I want something with women of color kicking ass, I want a happy bouncy Martha vid, I want a Hiro/Ando vid, I want a vid of the POC in Heroes, I want a vid of Christina from Grey's Anatomy, I want an Ugly Betty vid), I want a Danny vid for Spooks, I want a vid of all the POC terrorists in Spooks, I want a Homicide vid on Pembleton-G-Barnfather-Meldrick, I want, I want I want. Heh.

An informal survey of my hard drive turned up 17 vids that were either: a) focused on a single COC, b) focused on a relationship between two characters, one of whom is a COC, or c) about an entirely non-white ensemble (permetaform's Hero vid). I figure if you start counting all appearances in ensembles, you'd have to count all SG-1, SGA, Angel, Torchwood, and Heroes vids, and that might give you a somewhat inflated number. Anyway, of those 17, 11 were for Stargate SG-1, which I'm sure reflects my own viewing habits, but also, I think, says something about the show, although it's certainly not above criticism. I suspect there are more BSG vids about Sharon out there that I haven't seen; I'd like to think there's more than one Gunn vid in existence, but I'm less optimistic about that.

As far as I can tell, there are no multifandom COC vids, although I'd very much like to see one, whether it was pissed off or celebratory.

For the sake of comparison, I have (yikes!) 522 vids on my computer, downloaded over the last five years, including just about everything I've seen recc'ed on Livejournal in that time. So diversity's at... 3%? Which is a little depressing.

I only know of one other Gunn vid, but I think it's pretty good.
