Vidding is SO MUCH EASIER when you are paying someone else to do all the work for you. Which I already knew, but still.

I fear that my inability to ever tell where the damn beat is, despite at least three different people going over it with me personally and at great length, dooms this endeavor.

Well, I can't speak to the beat issue, but as I'm sure you know, your first several vids will be as much a struggle with the tech aspects as with the artistic - once you get the basics of the tech down, it all goes more smoothly, although (as I'm sure you've seen) you never stop struggling with it.

I might be able to help with at least a few of these things, if you want to chat about them at Wiscon. We could, for example, take a vid or two that you like and go through it/them very slowly...?

Yes! Although I have not tried watching vids on new toy yet; I will have to see whether it's even possible with the screen size. I don't know how detailed the tech help can be without the software to mess around with, but Laura's already said some helpful general things, so I would be happy to pester you with my clueless confusion. :)

I'm slightly reassured to hear that you're having so much trouble with all this. Not that I want you to fail at vidding (perish the thought!) but as an acknowledgement that even THE SMART PEOPLE find working with this stuff difficult, and thus my abortive attempt, which crashed & burned, stymying my nascent vidding impulse, wasn't solely a result of my own stupidity.

I hope things go more smoothly for you in the future!

It is really hard! I played with a friend's setup for about 20 minutes with personal oversight and was so convinced I couldn't do it that I managed to put things off for several months.

I am reminding myself very firmly of various educational theories that say smart is acquired, not inherited. I can acquire this skill set.
