1. Watari's really dead.
   
2. L died but was resuscitated (he's just like Buffy!) and convinced Yagami to lie for him, as he's done in the past, in order to entrap Light.
   

Or I could be in denial, since L is my favorite. And besides the not wanting him to be dead, I think the series ought to have (had) him use or misuse the death note at some point. He's Light's shadow, after all, and Light's twin (no one thinks that "L" was chosen at random, right?). It could just end with L getting the death note--"Lady or the Tiger" or Watchmen type of thing--but that seems like a cop-out.

Thank God the third Kira evils-of-cutthroat-business-competition arc is over. It bored me to tears.
