VVC 2013 Playlist Post (The playlists will eventually link to the vid as hosted by the vidder, but these links may not be live yet.)

I haven't seen all the premiering vids yet, but of the ones I have seen, my favorites are:

[personal profile] rhoboat, Supremacy (James Bond) [Premieres]
This is the stand-out vid of the con for me. It makes me want to actually watch the second two Daniel Craig Bond films, even if it makes me want to watch them for Judi Dench and not Daniel Craig. But mostly it makes me want to watch it over and over and over again to figure out the exact details of how the action during the choruses is cut, because, guys, I want to figure it out. The movement and positioning here is phenomenal, and it's hooked to enough of a character study or emotional or narrative arc to keep me heavily invested.

[livejournal.com profile] bananainpyjamas, I'm Not Superman (Lego Batman: DC Superheroes) [Premieres]
This is the most fun vid of the con for me. And it made me care about tiny plastic Batman's pain! It made me ship tiny plastic Batman and tiny plastic Superman! Tiny plastic Batman emotes way more than Christian Bale. Life is SO HARD for tiny plastic Batman.

[personal profile] ghost_lingering, Shepherds (Firefly/Serenity) [Challenge]
Full disclosure: I offered to beta this a while ago. I ... did not actually manage to send any beta comments.

Utterly compelling. Uses dialogue edited into a spoken word performance in a beautiful and rhythmic way to construct a backstory/autobiography for Book. It is short but feels incredibly full.

[personal profile] absolutedestiny, Age Like Wine (Multi) [Challenge]
For a few clips I thought this was the remix challenge, but it swiftly became clear it was a self-portrait. Though I do still think of it as a kind of remix of "Walking on the Ground."

[livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett, Retrograde (Beasts of the Southern Wild) [Premieres]
Leaves ripples in the water.

[personal profile] kass, Bathysphere (Fringe) [Also Premiering]
Briefly tempted me to watch Fringe again. Olivia Dunham: Still the best.

[personal profile] obsessive24, Devil Wouldn't Recognize You (Elementary) [Also Premiering]
Intense to the point of claustrophobia.

[livejournal.com profile] destina, Sorrow (The Eagle) [Premieres]
A lovely and evocative mood piece.

[personal profile] shati, Total Eclipse of the Heartsword (Revolutionary Girl Utena) [Kareoke]
An accurate representation of Utena.

Not new, but new to me
Kitovraska, Loneliness (I Love You ... I'll Kill You) (Disney movies) [Brand-New Classic Hits]
The tragic romance of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Pogo, Alice (Disney remix) (Alice in Wonderland) [Brand-New Classic Hits]
I'm not sold on all the choices about repeated footage, but this is bizarre and dreamlike, not in the drifty floaty way but in the disturbing disjunctive way. Scraps of memory and scraps of meaning.

Wiscon vid party premieres:

playlist, panel discussion

[personal profile] chaila, Keep the Streets Empty for Me (Twilight)
Bella is the peak predator.

[personal profile] prozacpark, Gingerbread Coffin (Pretty Little Liars)
Dolls are creepy.

[livejournal.com profile] kiki_miserychic, Apr├Ęs Moi (Person of Interest)
If POI were the Shaw & Root show, I would be watching it.

Not a premiere, but I hadn't seen it before:
[personal profile] rhivolution, Fire and Water (Pumzi) [not yet up]
Water is life.

Marvel Cinematic Universe stories:
[archiveofourown.org profile] hollimichelle, The Personal (Assistant) Is Political
Steve Rogers is an FDR Democrat. The modern media does not actually understand what an FDR Democrat is.

[archiveofourown.org profile] Ael_tRlailiiu, Black Swans
I keep recommending this to people in person, then never sending them the follow-up email with links. This is a gen series about the Avengers solidifying as a team after the movie. (I'm calling this gen because it has about as much Tony/Pepper as the movies -- it's an important subplot, but it's not the point of the story.) My favorite of the set is the last one, A Higher Form of War, but I strongly recommend reading the whole thing in order. Each story stands alone, but in conjunction they form a very satisfying narrative arc.

[archiveofourown.org profile] wolfinglet, your telescope eyes
Maya Hansen has a girlfriend, and also a history.

I was going to start off with fandoms I knew, but then I got overwhelmed and started clicking at random. Here are some festivids I particularly liked, some for fandoms I know and some not:

Serpent Charmer (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford)
Staccato seduction.

O Death (The Book of Eli)
The arrow. I mean -- the arrow!

Last Chance Texaco (Caprica)
Grief and connections.

Space Oddity (Community)
... I guess I have to watch this show now.

I'm Your Man (Jekyll)
Love is a monster.

Illumination (Joseon X-Files)
I had no idea the show's title was so literal. Also, this is so gorgeous -- I think I've rewatched it more than any vid that wasn't made for me.

Beat Control (Lilo and Stitch)
Made me so happy I almost cried.

Truth Is In the Dirt (V - 2009)
Creepy and clever.
thuviaptarth: woman with fistpump of triumph captioned "VID ALL THE THINGS!" (vid all the things!)
So! Lately people have made me some brilliant things!

First, [livejournal.com profile] futuresoon wrote me Must Be Something in the Air, a pitch-perfect Diana Wynne Jones' Derkholm story set after The Year of the Griffin. I have such a soft spot for The Year of the Griffin ! I love that it is a class of misfit students banding together against their teachers, and that the problem is that the teachers are not teaching hard enough. The students are there to learn things, you know! There should be more studying and tougher exams! It is maybe a little too shallow and quick, and I want more of everybody in it, and yet I find it some pleasant and comforting -- maybe because I want more of everybody in it. But especially I want more of plain, sensible Claudia, who fixes everyone's problems, whom Blade falls in love with suspiciously quickly. And it's not exactly that I object to this, because I too find Claudia immensely loveable, it's that, well, it kind of happens in two paragraphs and off-stage. So futuresoon wrote me an episode from Blade's courtship of Claudia, and it contains marsh food and mention of Lydia's divine snacks and Blade being clever and also taking advantage of parental connections, and it mentions everybody and it is just awesome.

Then! There is Festivids! For which I got two amazing vids about relationships between women.

For Huge, [Anonymous #1] made me In the Sun, a Becca character study that puts her relationship with Will in the context of her other relationships--with Chloe, with Alastair, and, not least of all, herself. It captures both Becca's shyness and her self-assertion and, perhaps best of all, there are lots of clips of her reading.

For Nikita (2010), [Anonymous #2] made me Threnody, a study of the connections between--and mirroring of--Nikita and Alex. It is simultaneously epic and tender, it is gorgeous and thoughtful, and it has Maggie Q blowing stuff up.

AO3 keeps erroring out, so no Yuletide recs as yet. However, I have a brand-new love, The Story of Saiunkoku because I am weak against practical heroines and intense sibling devotion, which means I am now two fandoms behind on feedback instead of one. From this year's holiday exchange:

Untitled by [anonymous] (Seiran, Ensei, Ryuuki, and Shuurei)
For this year's Saiunkoku holiday exchange, [anon] wrote me three vignettes about the families Seiran makes and/or finds over the course of his life. Right now, the one with Ensei is my favorite, because I cannot resist Seiran being grumpy or Ensei throwing pebbles rocks, but it's hard to pick.

The Joy of Mozart by [anonymous]
In which: Ryuuki, Shuuei, and Kouyuu are members of a viskei band, and Ensei and Seiran are their bodyguards.
Privately I think of this as taking place in the same universe as [livejournal.com profile] grey_damaskena's Gravitation AU. Ryuuki is a dork, Seiran is put-upon, Kouyou is grumpy, and Shuei wears ripped jeans. Okay, my favorite visual is actual Ryuuki in a plum frock coat with piercings all along one ear, but that may be because I am so sad he only wears earrings in one illustration in the novels, which appears to have been ret-conned out of existence.

Untitled by [anonymous] (Shuurei/Seiran, NC-17)
Wonderful sensual detail.

Here You Are by [anonymous] (Kouyou)
For once, Kouyou actually finds his way home.

I love these vids as much as I love all the vids I recced earlier, but I am tired and out of energy so I probably will not sound like I do. Also, the comments will be spectacularly inane. The vids are much better, I swear.

I loved the diversity of this year's premieres -- in sources, in racial representation, in genre, in mood. I think it was the most light-hearted Premieres show in several years, with a greater sprinkling of comedy and light-hearted vids than has become usual.

I won't be commenting on every vid, not even every one I liked, and I hope to manage actual feedback on a lot more vids than I will be mentioning here. But these are my favorites, at least for today.

SPN AU, Sam/Dean. This is gorgeous -- epic and noir and hot and delicious in word and detail. There are a few Britishisms and one oddity of geography, but these are quibbles.

It didn't even have to be my fandom. It would have had me at the angel doing coke in a Hell's Kitchen bar. (And then hooker Dean showed up. ILU, FANDOM!)

Wow, I am so behind that everyone has probably seen all of these, and my New Year's resolution to send more feedback lasted, like, six weeks. But at least this will remind me of what I've been watching.

Avatar: The Last Airbender
[livejournal.com profile] cherryice, Tamacun
You will want a flying bison of your very own.

Fringe
[livejournal.com profile] cherryice, The Day the Air Turned Blue
Eerie, disorienting episodic vid for "Jacksonville."

[livejournal.com profile] kiki_miserychic, The Dream and the Tunnel Pie House Rats
Dreamy episodic vid for "Brown Betty." I think it may have every single one of my favorite moments in the episode.

Legend of the Seeker
[livejournal.com profile] bradcpu, Lightning Field
I love the feverish intensity of this, the obsessive longing of it, the sense that Kahlen is holy violence for Cara when all the violence she'd known before was unholy.

Star Trek
[livejournal.com profile] heresluck, The Test
h.l. always make clarity look effortless, no matter how complex the ideas. I love the expansive feel of this, the wide shots of leaps and falls and horizons opening up.

Supernatural
[personal profile] lithiumdoll, Glittering Clouds (Locusts)
This blows me away. In SPN--and most SPN vids--the possessed are a presence that are an absence; they're right there, but we don't see them, we just see the demons. This vid makes the invisible obvious.

[livejournal.com profile] newkidfan, Family Business
Well-constructed Dean/Castiel AU: Castiel is an assassin and Dean is the FBI agent hunting him down.

[livejournal.com profile] still404ing, Until We Bleed
Gorgeous and heartbreaking envisioning of the alternate timeline in "The End."

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
[livejournal.com profile] beccatoria, Howl
A Jesse vid that gets across how much Jesse is a fighter, how her past (the future) is the skeleton beneath the present's skin.
thuviaptarth: festivids on blue and white swirl (festivids)
Oh, god, I think I have been watching vids for three and a half hours straight, my eyes are going to fall out. And I haven't commented, not even more than a placeholder for MY VID MINE MINE FOR ME!!, because I can't put reactions together.

But so far, these are my (other) favorites:

Past in Present (Chak De! India)
Mother Mary (China Beach)
Never Be (Criminal Minds)
Me & My 424 (Dark Angel)
Body and Soul (Legend of the Seeker)
You Belong with Me (Lois & Clark)
Feel It (So You Think You Can Dance)
Meddle (The Vampire Diaries)

And I have only seen, hmm, the source for two of these vids. So, you know, canon knowledge not required.

I have been playing mad guessing games about who did which vid in my head, but I am not sharing because I'm not sure everyone would like to play. I will be keeping private score, though! By which I mean that I will remember all the ones I got right and forget all the ones I got wrong and convince myself that I am skilled at identifying vidders purely by style.

ETA: Ahaha. Okay. So as per Yuletide tradition, if you guess which vid I made, I will make you at least a 30-second vidlet for a fandom TBD. Mods and betas are disqualified. No responses before the reveal.
thuviaptarth: ruby whirling, captioned "the demon chick" (ruby)

[personal profile] sweetestdrain did a nine- ten-minute Terminator universe vid to Patti Smith's "Land" and it is TOTALLY AWESOME, guys! Butterflies are tears and chaos theory and terminators are horses and the future is death and there is no fate and maybe it is a different Sarah Connor each time, a different John Connor, a different girl who survives, a different boy, a different war, or maybe it isn't, maybe it's the same conception each time, and those silver metal drops are hope anyway, and eels in the sea, the sea of possibilities, the sea of all the futures there are and could be. AWESOME.

[livejournal.com profile] with_a_kay, untitled (SPN RPS/J2):

Jared had to beg his parents for weeks before they let him take the scholarship he got offered for Maple Academy.

"But it's so far away," his mother said. "We'll never see you, sweetie."

"Summer! And Christmas. And it's a great opportunity, mama, and I'll get a lot more attention for a good college."

"I don't like the idea of you being all alone up north," she hedged. "We haven't even got any family around there."

"It's the age of technology," said Jared. "I'll always be just a phone call or an e-mail away. Please, mama. I really want this."

Of course, she'd caved in the end, as Jared knew she would, and Jared got to go off to private school, where he assumed there would be a rose-themed dueling society, or a cat for a ballet teacher, or maybe everyone would just secretly be a blackbelt and involved in a complicated fight club.

Maybe, if he was lucky, all of the above.

I don't recognize the one in which everyone's secretly a blackbelt and involved in a complicated fight club. This makes me sad.

So apparently I have this thing with RPF where I'm doing fine for a while and then I crack and look up pictures of the "characters" and then I know too much about them and get freaked out again. Especially when people are writing about, like, daily life, instead of writing screwball comedies set in outer space (complete works of [livejournal.com profile] with_a_kay) or AU slavery epics with boys in cages and stuff. Also, no one in fic mentioned that Ryan Ross looks like he's twelve. I feel dirty now.

So I do not want fic recs, but I did put in that one Fall Out Boy CD I got in 2003 when they were playing in Central Park with Coheed & Cambria (who apparently hate them! and whose one CD from 2003 I also have! I blame [livejournal.com profile] wordsofastory) and I remembered I kind of liked it, and then I watched Beat It and understood why everyone was so crazy about Patrick Stump even though, on the face of it (and it's a pretty face to have), Pete Wentz is the hot one. I am not sure I have ever seen anything else that managed to be that ridiculous and that sexy at the same time.

I read a bunch of bandom primers but they all tell me about characters and personal lives and shit and really, all I want is to read lots of interviews about the music and the video concepts and how The Black Parade and The Umbrella Academy are secretly part of this vast multiverse soap opera Gerard Way plotted out in chemistry class when he was fifteen, because, ohmygod, they so clearly are. When I was fifteen I was plotting out four-volume fantasy series and scarfing down interviews with writers, and now I must make up for my lost youth, because, in general, musicians are way hotter than writers. Sad but true. I would say I need pictures to pin up to my wall or hard drive, but in fact the bandom primers have that covered.

Also, someone out there has written fic set in Janelle Monae's alt-Metropolis android slavery future from the Many Moons video/short film, right? Please tell me this is true. Include illustrative links.

[livejournal.com profile] aycheb, Nobody Loves You
A vid like poetry. Noir Ellison, black and white, crisp, puts the clues together like a gumshoe does. But the slinky femme fatale he finds (naked, sleek, Brancusi sculpture in motion) is not about sex. All the surveillance footage here: watching watchers watching, Ellison watching Cromartie, Weaver watching Ellison watching Cromartie, photographers taking pictures of Weaver, images of Jesus in plaster and stained glass. The images blur: the reflections in glass, the images through tanks of water, the images on screen; the picture skipping like stuck tape, the gravestones running like film strips. Future and present and past colliding, merging, running into each other, movies displayed on the monitors and images showing through layers. Heaven's hardware problem spelled out in equations and blood.

Computer logic is predicated on Or, on definites, on black and white, on the individual squares of color that deceive the eye into seeing shades. But Weaver is And and One, liquid, changeable, water, invisible, reflecting back what is around her, showing the reflection of the eye, looking back.

[livejournal.com profile] cherryice, Unsteady Ground; [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl, Life in a Glass House; [livejournal.com profile] heyiya, Exit Music for a Witch
A troika of Merlin re-envisionings focused on Morgana, especially on her psychic visions/dreams and her ambiguous canonical/extracanonical position both inside and outside the charmed circle of power and intimacy.

In "Unsteady Ground," reflections in a shattered mirror and a spider crawling over a porcelain cheek signal the doomed mythic endeavor, the push-pull of all the characters as powerful and powerless, righteous and cruel, aggressor and victimized. History and foretold future identically disrupt the steadiness of the ground, the identification, the understanding: giving the keys to freedom to an unjustly imprisoned man kills him.

"Life in a Glass House" contrasts the gendered depictions of Merlin and Morgana, from the first close-up of the eyes: Closing in on Merlin's eyes shows what he sees, shows his power as active, shows him as powerful and full of agency; closing in on Morgana's eyes shows her victimized by her own power, made helpless by it, subject to it, able to use it only in her sleep. Her beauty, like her power, is made by femininity into a weapon and a curse, a shield against the power of others that will only take her so far; her own sympathies betray her. Her only hope is that some sympathetic power hears her wishes for revenge; her tragedy is that one does.

"Exit Music for a Witch" constructs a triumphant ending for the oppressed peoples of Camelot: magic users, witches, druids, blacksmiths' injured daughters. Sucks to be Merlin in this future, but that's what you get for siding with the patriarchy, dude. Brilliant and lovely and very clear storytelling.

[livejournal.com profile] obsessive24, Effigy (Merlin)
I have such conflicted feelings about this! It does such violence to Gwen's character to fit her into the position of the mythic Guinevere. Which may be the vid's point.

[livejournal.com profile] kiki_miserychic, So Say We All (It's All Part of a Bigger Plan) (Battlestar Galactica)
This reminds of what it was like when I first saw vids: overwhelming, exhausting, incomprehensible, moving but I cannot say what emotions it moves me to.

I like it a lot.

[livejournal.com profile] charmax, Unnatural Evolution (Battlestar Galactica/Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles/Charles Darwin's The Origin of the Species)
This monkey's gone to Heaven.

This is so astonishing I just want to make big eyes and incoherent sounds and flailing hand gestures at you about it.

Ohmygod, people, I am so behind on everything! I feel now that I have FINALLY finished the vid, I can take a breath and look around and ... obsessively focus on [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. (Poor Yuletide writer, if you tracked my LJ as I track my assignee's, I swear, I will write the letter this weekend. And if you have already written the story sans letter, I am sure it is awesome and also I hate and envy your industry and time management. But in a good way.)

Anyway, I did dimly notice some cool things going on up in the air while I was submerged, and in case you missed them, they included:

  • [livejournal.com profile] tishaturk is an acafan who has cool thoughts on vids and narrative
  • [livejournal.com profile] bop_radar has been hosting informative vidding chats
  • Vids I have really liked and need to send feedback on:

    • [livejournal.com profile] danegen, Used to Love Him (Heathers) - Heathers is the MOVIE OF MY HEART, guys. Okay, I haven't watched it in way too long, but seriously, up until BtVS, I did not think there would ever be another work of art that ever captured the American high school experience so well. (I have to admit, I had forgotten about all the eighties hair. Because when I saw the movie in the eighties, that was just normal.) This vid gets Veronica and everything about Veronica and GODDAMN why can't we have more smart, sharp, mixed-up female heroines like her? Oh, Veronica.

    • [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift, Non Lievi Alchun (Merlin) - I have never seen Merlin, and a knowledge of Arthurian myth is not helping me parse this vid, which, after what I'd heard about the series, is not a surprise. I do not care. It is gorgeous. Windows and fair maidens at windows, facing horrors and turning away from them, and Morgana with her Lady of Shalott hair spread out in an implausibly untangled way as she sleeps -- so gorgeous. (Does she say, "The curse is come upon me" in the show? That would be awesome.)

    • [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift, Sea Lion (Supernatural) - I actually have Deep Thoughts about this and [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain's "Lagrimas" and something [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza said at VVC and something [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu said shortly after VVC and something [livejournal.com profile] shati said a while ago (also see her awesome Zoe vid!), but I am running out of time, so I will just say, "WOW" and try to get back to it later.

    • [livejournal.com profile] proofpudding, Pretty (Supernatural) - This gets at the essential wrongness of Sam/Ruby in a profound and profoundly sexy way. I love the claustrophobic close-ups, the tight shots, the chain link backgrounds emphasizing the dead-endedness and entrapment that drive the participants into the relationship. Short, sharp, killer.

  • Oh! Also I have been looking at professional music videos with an eye towards how they resemble and differ from vids, and also as objects in themselves (I was the right age but the wrong place for MTV), and I was fascinated by these:

    • Two different videos (but with the same color scheme) to Walking with a Ghost (and dude, I totally could figure out how to do Video #2 in AE. It would take a year, but I could do it. I have the technology.)
    • Beyonce, If I Were A Boy
    • And, um, there was another one, but I can't find the link or remember the name.

I'm sure I've forgotten a dozen somethings, but they'll have to wait.
