thuviaptarth: a hand lighting a candle set in a grooved surface (origin stories)
[livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss has additional commentary here.

I've been so happy and excited about the responses to "Origin Stories," I can't even tell you. One of the best parts has been people making interpretations or extending the critique in ways I never imagined, but which nevertheless seem validated by both the vid and its source texts--people starting with [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss, but not ending there. So this isn't an "explanation" of the vid, which for better or worse has to explain itself, and it isn't meant as a definitive guide to interpretation (I don't believe in definitive interpretations); as long as it is, it isn't even everything I could say about what I meant or what I wanted or what I love about the vid [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss made.

And, as GK says, none of this is meant to override or take the place of any other interpretations, and it's not meant to be necessary to understand the vid. It is more a concession to my vanity than anything else. Feel free to skip over it.

Lyrics )

I gave [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss a song, a summary line, two very long emails about the conceptual basis of the vid, four or five lyric matching suggestions, and a ton of headaches during the beta process. She made a vid that did everything I wanted but even better. It was like all the fun parts of writing a story without any of the hard parts, and she never once complained about the Sweet Charity story I owed her, already three months overdue. It was AWESOME.

I am being all quiet and restrained because I love the vid so much I'm almost exploding with it. But what I want to say most is: GO WATCH IT NOW NOW NOW. PLEASE.

I found out today that Wicked Amp had a new Faith vid--well, new to me, anyway; she put it up in February. Like all her live-action vids, it's got the really unusual look of anime techniques applied to live action: odd frames and image cut-out; heavy effects; an unusual focus on internal action and movement; color-tinting, negatives, and breaks to static for emotional effect; probably more and shorter cuts than usual (although not necessarily, compared to, say, [livejournal.com profile] sisabet).

My favorite of her vids remains "Break Me Off A Switch," which is probably where you should start if you haven't tried her work before. "Slot A" isn't entirely successful; there are multiple parts where I wish someone had taken away her effects toolbox, and either cut out the effects or made her use a smaller subset of them, because some of the choices look downright silly. But where the vid works, it really works.

And I don't often see new Faith vids which don't feel like they're covering ground I've seen covered before and better.

Her Angel/Buffy vids are here and her anime vids are here. People who got the 2003 Vividcon discs may have already seen one of the latter, "One Million Miles," a Read or Die vid, which back then I found incomprehensible but fascinating.

Meme most recently from [livejournal.com profile] katie_m: For one/some/any or all of your stories, let us know what you really wanted to do and couldn't quite achieve

It seems arrogant to say so, but I like most of my stories. There's always a sentence or two that makes me cringe, but for the most part I like my prose and I think the stories succeed at what I attempted. The things that dissatisfy me are more often that in retrospect what I was attempting doesn't seem worth doing.

So keeping it to things where I had a particular goal and failed:

Bindings (Angel Sanctuary) )

The Language of Angels (Angel Sanctuary) )

Truly and Forever (Buffy) )

I was going to do a couple more but I've run out of time. Maybe later, if anyone else is interested.

[livejournal.com profile] leadensky asked for commentary on "On the Way to Grandmother's House."

Is anyone else convinced the commentaries will make people hate stories they used to like?  Just me?  Okay.  Take that as your warning.

Also, this is much, much longer than the actual story.

(If you read this and decide to rescind your request for another commentary, just let me know.)

Current fanfic: Oh, the Buffy-ness.

I've been reading Hth's femslash -- she does a terrific Faith, fallen or redeemed, and an even better Tara, fragile and quiet and busy inside her head.  And then there's Buffy, and Dru, and Veruca, and ...

So far, my favorites are:

  • Orleans, that cold Wish-verse Buffy come like an avenging angel to town; but the only voices in her head are memories; God doesn't live here anymore;

    and:

  • Pink Ladies, Tara and Drusilla and stream of consciousness and this is the way the world ends, even if it's only Tara's world;

    and:

  • Rumble Thy Bellyful: Faith/Veruca.  Why, yes.  Of course.

And Jane St Clair does a terrific Wesley, though I do get a little tired of PWP.  Her bittersweet broken Faith/Cordelia Mockingbird is worth checking out too.
